Guruji, Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar today is regarded as the revered pioneer yoga guru. His contributions have surpassed many centuries of knowledge in this field. He took the essence of yoga to the cellular level, something which no one else had explored. He was the author of many books on yoga practice and philosophy including Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Light on Life and many more.
The lineage of his teaching have been carried on my his daughters Smt. Geeta Iyengar & Smt. Sunita Parthasarathy, his son Sri Prashant Iyengar, his grand-daughter Smt. Abhijata Sridhar Iyengar.
Guruji BKS Iyengar
A form of Hatha Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of asana & pranayama. Use of props, such as belts, blocks, blankets & chairs as aids in performing asanas help students perform correctly, with no risk of injury or strain, and making it easy by both young and old. This system aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being.
Geeta Ji has been mother-like to all her students. She is Guruji's eldest daughter. She has endured a long way, standing neck to neck with Guruji going through the ups and downs throughout the journey of establishing Iyengar Yoga on the world footprint. Geetaji also specialised her teaching to adopt to women health during various stages of a female's life. She has written many books like 'Yoga: A Gem For Women', 'Iyengar Yoga For Motherhood'
Prashant Iyengar is Guruji's son. Prashant Ji's teachings go beyond just the body as he talks about integration of mind, body & breath to evolve the consciousness. Yoga according to him is purely physical & gym-like if asanas are done for body purely. But when done in a union with mind & breath, the experience takes off to a new paradigm of education & transformation. He has authored numerous books that explain yoga through his wisdom.
Prashant S. Iyengar
Abhijata is Guruji's granddaughter. She is young and dynamic and so are her teachings of Iyengar Yoga. She has been trained for a number of years under Guruji and she now teaches at Pune & also internationally. She is stern, authoritative, compassionate & lively. Each of her words reflect the wisdom of her seniors who have blessed her to take the Iyengar legacy to new levels.
